The Renaissance was a cultural movement during the 14th century up to the 17th century. It started in Florence, Italy and later spread throughout Europe in the late Middle Ages. During this time, there were a lot of new discoveries and cultural movements in art, science, religion, humanism and self-awareness. Renaissance is the french word for Rebirth.
During the Renaissance, clothing played a very important role in society just like it does today. It was so important that those who belonged to the upper class would spend a great deal of money on clothes. In that period, clothes said much about the wearer’s social standing and it was what distinguished the nobles from the peasants. The rich nobleman wore rich fabrics like velvet, satin and cotton while the peasants wore flannel and other cheap fabrics.
The men in the Renaissance age usually wore boots, pants, a shirt, a vest and a hat while the women wore shoes, an over and under skirt, a shirt, a bodice, and a hat. The common women often braid their long hair while curls were a mark of beauty. The influence of Renaissance clothing spread from England to Spain, France, Italy, Germany and other European countries.
